Fortunately I had the opportunity to meet with the Senator in person. I reiterated my objections to the bills, and pointed out that the NRA actually drafted what reads like a mental health civil commitment statute that secondarily considers firearms—nothing remotely similar to current and proposed “red flag laws.” The forces behind “red flag laws” specifically want mental health left out of them, both for fear of stigmatizing the mentally ill, and wanting to facilitate confiscation from a much larger group of gun owners…

After listening, he replied in the end “You’d be worse off with the other candidate.” This earned him an election “red card”—immediate ejection from the game.

This is the brazen but kinda honest RINO politician’s argument: “Yep, I don’t really support that outdated Second Amendment or what you wackos claim to be your self-defense rights, but at least I’m not going to take away all your guns like the crazy Dem to my left will. So vote for me!”

How to respond depends on the situation and the district/state. A vigorous primary challenge, of course. But in some cases, tactically, it might be better for the cause for the crazy Dem to win. The Dem’s complete gun ban is going to be easier to challenge in court (given current 2A jurisprudence) than a red flag law.

Also in some district/states an incumbent RINO will be harder to get rid of than a “ban them all!” Dem.
