There are lots of things that might end the welfare state but are bad ideas.

A World War III with a mandatory draft of young men and women might end the welfare state, but the benefit would not be worth the cost.

Same with the “libertarians” who claim that unlimited immigration and open borders might end the welfare state. We might reasonably ask whether the benefit is worth the cost.

(We might also reasonably ask when “unlimited immigration and open borders” somehow became a libertarian virtue. The men and women who emigrated to form the American colonies, and imposed astonishingly strict immigration rules for generations to come, would hardly agree. Perhaps “unlimited immigration and open borders” became a “libertarian” virtue when it became profitable for Beltway “libertarians” to take that position.)
