    Excerpt from the end:

Punitive taxes aren’t about the taxes — they’re about the punishment. That taxation should have been converted from a technical question into a moral crusade speaks to the basic failure of the progressive enterprise in the United States and to the deficiency of American political discourse.

Williamson is right here (National Review is not always wrong).

This is probably a subset of the left’s desire to punish, deplatform, and eventually deperson their political opponents. The right thinks the left is dumb–and needs to read more Friedman–while the left thinks the right is evil. Big difference. This is why we have all of the deplatforming examples from the left, and today’s news about the California sheriff who can’t stand that non-Democrats might be invited to a charity event.

Another example: If the left really wanted to ban Some Scary Black Guns, they might actually have been able to work out a deal with President Trump and pull it off this fall. If the left’s top priority was ending gun violence, they could have done that.

But their desire to punish, deplatform, and eventually deperson their political opponents was, as always, stronger. So we’re now talking about civil war 2.0. Great.
