Williams writes: “Crime is a major problem for the black community… We should re-adopt the values and practices of our ancestors.” This is sage advice, but I’d add that his advice should not be limited to black neighborhoods or cities. Poor whites in Appalachia have crime and drug problems not entirely dissimilar from these, coupled with lack of economic gains, single mothers, family breakdown, also not entirely dissimilar.
What’s changed in the last two generations that caused this societal decay (perhaps even destruction). And is there enough time remaining to do something about it?
