Succumbing to public pressure, the governing board of the Cow Palace in Daly City voted unanimously on Tuesday to ban gun shows at the state-owned arena by the end of 2019.
The move, however, was not enough to convince state Sen. Scott Wiener, D-San Francisco, to pull legislation that would transfer oversight of the Daly City facility from state to local control. The board only moved to end gun shows because of the threat of disbanding it, said Victor Ruiz-Cornejo, a spokesman for Wiener.
The board’s decision comes after years of efforts by Bay Area leaders to ban gun sales at the facility, including a succession of state bills dating back to 2007, all of which were ultimately vetoed by former governors Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jerry Brown.
It’s interesting that the Cow Palace is willing to host a marijuana show, which is federally illegal, but won’t host a gun show which is federally legal… Crossroads of the West is considering its options for the future. We will not be bullied into discontinuing our lawful business in California or anywhere else. See you at the Cow Palace November 16, 17.
This is a ratchet. If California’s anti-constitutional left gets away with get rid of gun shows, look for them to try to get rid of gun stores too. As JWR points out, they’ve managed to do much of this already even without an outright ban:
Even in the 1970s and 1980s, the majority of Californians respected the right to keep and bear arms. Some of the best gunsmiths in the country had their shops in L.A. and San Francisco. For example, I had some trigger work done on my first M1911 by the great F. Bob Chow. And one of the best gun shops in the country was the San Francisco Gun Exchange. It had an amazing inventory. Gone. High Bridge Arms–San Francisco’s last gun shop (founded by Bob Chow) closed its doors in 2015. Gone. And even Weatherby Inc. recently packed up and moved to Sheridan, Wyoming.
