Andrew Sullivan is gay and pro-trans (“trans kids emerge from the shadows, which, of course, is a great and overdue thing”) and defended drag queen story hour. But this article has him agreeing with Rod Dreher on this movement’s totalitarian direction:
We cannot allow biology, evolution, reproductive strategy, hormones, chromosomes, and the customs of every single human culture since the beginning of time to interfere with “social justice.”… Adults are increasingly forced to obey the new norms of “social justice” or be fired, demoted, ostracized, or canceled. Many resist; many stay quiet; a few succumb and convert.
It’s one thing to say: “I’m calling myself trans, and I want to be left alone to my own devices.” Fair enough. It’s another to say: “I’m calling myself trans, and I require you to use this pronoun or go to jail for hate speech, and if you don’t accept drag queen story hour in libraries you’re a bigot, and if you object to trans normalization in your child’s elementary school textbook I’m going to organize a Twitter hatemob and get you fired from your job.”
