William Barr’s excellent speech, with recommendations that would have been uncontroversial a generation or two ago, is here:

the secular project has itself become a religion, pursued with religious fervor. It is taking on all the trappings of a religion, including inquisitions and excommunication.

Those who defy the creed risk a figurative burning at the stake – social, educational, and professional ostracism and exclusion waged through lawsuits and savage social media campaigns.

either through legislation but more frequently through judicial interpretation, secularists have been continually seeking to eliminate laws that reflect traditional moral norms.

Barr gets it. The left understands it can’t convert the Boomers to its new religion, but they’re dying off. The left may not have great luck converting Gen Xers, but muzzling them with threats of ostracism and excommunication from their jobs and polite society is enough. So the left is, cunningly, targeting our children.

But the fact that Barr gets it is not enough. The attorney general may be woke. He may want to implement President Trump’s religious freedom agenda (at this point really religious freedom preservation). But we have seen how senior Justice Department and FBI officials plot against the president. Names like Comey, McCabe, Ohr, Strozk, Rosenstein, and Page come to mind.

The Deep State’s tentacles have a long reach. Even if Barr is committed to this fight, and I believe him to be sincere, he cannot count on the rest of the Department the way he should. The rot may be too deep.

And this from Rod Dreher, who pretty much hates President Trump–this week he called the president “nuts” and an “incompetent boob” and “stupid” who should probably be canned by the GOP–but at least is woke enough to go beyond Orange Man Bad:

Let me simply say that as we religious conservatives are thinking about how to vote in the election next fall, we should ponder the fact that under Donald Trump, as awful as he is in so many ways, a man of William Barr’s convictions is heading up the Department of Justice. Thank God Bill Barr is there. It is inconceivable that any Democratic president would put a man like him in charge of the Justice Department. In fact, we are getting a good idea that a Democratic president would likely choose his precise opposite.

If religious liberty is the most important public issue to you — and, as a religious believer, should it not be? — then the Barr speech should be front to mind as you consider voting. The state cannot give us meaning, but it can maintain the spaces necessary for us to discover meaning. Or not. This is important. This is very, very important.
