When Indiana and other states protected religious freedom by not forcing residents to bake same-sex cakes that violated their religious beliefs, Apple CEO Tim Cook went on the warpath. Cook wrote an oped in the Washington Post charging that the laws were “very dangerous,” “rationalize injustice,” and even “go against the very principles our nation was founded on.”

What a stirring defense of human rights! We must force that Christian to bake that cake, at gunpoint if necessary! Freedom for all, except of course those deplorable unmentionables…

Meanwhile, the Chinese government actually locks up gay men and women, engages in involuntary electroshock therapy, and outlaws pro-gay organizations, according to this Human Rights Watch report and this Outright International report:

The abuses that occur in conversion therapy — including involuntary confinement; verbal harassment and intimidation; lack of informed consent in writing or orally; forced use of medicine; and forced psychiatric intervention — violate domestic and international standards, and the human rights of LGBT people…

Use of electroshocks have arguably amounted to acts of torture, or inhuman or degrading treatment.

China does not have a law protecting individuals from discrimination due to sexual orientation or gender identity…

the Guangzhou government released a statement on ‘illegal organizations’ that are banned in Guangzhou, the capital of Guangdong Province in Southern China… Guangzhou University Rainbow Group (They are a student led movement. They organize events such as discussions about sexuality at the university)

What does Apple CEO Tim Cook, that valiant defender of human rights for oppressed gay men and women, do? He bans criticism of China, deletes apps that the Chinese government doesn’t like, and tells Apple TV show creators not to “besmirch” China’s government.

    Hypocrisy is an understatement.
