The author of the linked article, despite being one of the best writers on this topic, allowed patriotism and his affection for the Constitution to cloud his judgment about the reality of the situation we find ourselves in today. For instance:
Canada has banned guns by an order from the executive branch. Well, these United States, The Land of The Free(TM), banned “bump stocks” by an order from the executive branch. At least Canada’s order seems to have a two-year grace period. Not so with the “bump stock” ban. This is despite our Second Amendment.
One of the leading Democrat candidates promised us that she will “take executive action” against firearms if elected. We already know that the Supreme Court is wishy-washy on the right to self defense. There is no reason to believe a SCOTUS majority would block her bold and courageous plan to “take executive action.” This is despite our Second Amendment.
Gun stores in many U.S. states remain closed by an order from the executive branch. Democrat-appointed anti-constitutionalist judges are denying restraining orders to block these emergency decrees. (Meanwhile, Wolverine Guns & Tackle in Canada has found a way to stay open with curbside pickups.) This is despite our Second Amendment.
The sad truth is that the Second Amendment is not self-enforcing. Remember the Soviet Constitution protected “freedom of speech, freedom of the press, freedom of assembly, including the holding of mass meetings, freedom of street processions and demonstrations.”
Our commitment to freedom, limited government, and the principles underlying the Constitution–those are what really matters.
