Turning Point USA brought in $8.3M in 2016 and $10.8M in 2017, per its IRS form 990. It’s bankrolled by wealthy Republicans including Home Depot co-founder Bernie Marcus and conservative financier Foster Friess, according to this IBT article.
$10.8M is probably less than what Google or Facebook spends on Blue Bottle Coffee every year, but in the nonprofit world, that’s a decent sum. The Cato Institute’s revenue is $30.3M.
Turning Point USA’s 990 form lists as its mission:
Turning Point USA educates students about the importance of fiscal responsibility, free markets, and capitalism. Through non-partisan debate, dialog, and discussion, Turning Point USA believes that every young person can be enlighten to true free market values.
Note what it does not say. It does not say defend traditional Judeo-Christian values. It does not say it will defend tradition at all. It does not say it’s time to end the nation’s abortion epidemic. It does not say it will protect Americans’ rights to self-defense. It does not say it will call for an enforceable border and sensible immigration laws. It does not say it will criticize grown men acting out in the form of crotch-flashing “drag queen story hours” or identifying as yellow scaled wingless dragons (a snake?).
Turning Point USA is interested only in economic policy. Good for Turning Point USA. I’m sure it can come up with fascinating insights on agriculture policy and perhaps publish a joint policy analysis with Cato on sugar subsidies.
Whatever Turning Point USA has to say, it is not an “America First” message. The groypers have figured this out. Turning Point USA seems to have no response. No wonder Charlie Kirk is running away.
